to be. led by a man we had to do we are denying ourselves that richness of the contribution that can come from women and i'm not saying that women or women of penn state they will make the right decision but an anxious offerman means there to give us a chance to have more women that will stand for other women but also we need to engage the my church of the man who are there so that amongst them we can have those that are concerned about its broader society is encouraged to stand up and to also lead from the front you talk about women putting themselves out there and encountering pushback or in some cases violence i'm thinking of the saudi women drivers pushing for more equality in a very modern day skill that you and i read in women campaigning for stronger domestic violence laws in russia and finding themselves imprisoned.
5:34 pm
will be easier to say oh my gosh i don't want to go to prison. just put up with the status quo. can we accept that no the truth of the matter is that said to is only change because some people. believe in a purpose that is bigger than them and they put themselves out there to to make the changes we continue to need people like that in our societies we also need young people is also to be initiated into activism so that they too are able to take a stand and to fight for the rights of their communities and to save their their own future when you yourself have done it you have been a word disloyal or you were just really president of south africa you know what the pressure is and what the responsibility people placed on you when you serve and
5:35 pm
what was cool was gratifying about you know i think the important thing about making yourself a public representative is to know that you are not there for yourself you are not . in order to serve so you have to gauge your success by the number of people whose lives are changing because of the work that you do you also need to understand that for that kind of a job is a no one has to thank you it is a thankless job you have to keep on trying even if they are and people who are the cheering you. you also need to know that it is not about self and richmond very important it is a lonely it is a life of sexual highs but it is very gratifying any many of these official posts that we we undertake the institutions actually provide you with enough
5:36 pm
platform and support. to to live a descent life saw for so much. for people that so much. is is being given much more is expected so that you can serve people we have much less than what you have in knowing their chair not there for yourself that being a public service is not being a public master actually there to serve always has to be has to be paramount and i think as leaders we really have to lead. by example it is not as difficult is it sometimes to be it can be done how important is it to have women such as cory aquino indira gandhi merkel theresa may. running a country what message does that serve to all of society it tells especially girls that this job can be done by someone who looks like me this job can be done by.
5:37 pm
there is a story i don't know if it's true but it's interesting never the same boys were asked in germany if they would want to be a head of state and one voice says well now in germany you can be a head of state only guilds can be heads of state because for the time that seven year old had lived they only knew one person who was a head of state and it was it was a woman saw that begin to shape how he says this role can you imagine how many roles in society were never see women or girls in those position and what and how that must shape the way kells a aspire in choose the their careers the diversity and the presence of men and women in positions of authority sends
5:38 pm
a message to boys and girls that this is for you to we're actually even challenging private sector my kids in advertising industry to ensure that we have got. change studio types in marketing and in advertising we have companies that have come together and partnering with us and we have formed and stereotype alliance and our our focus is to change the way the marketing and advertising industry projects both men and women in the best interest of creating a society where everyone can be a fair amount but isn't that a problem isn't that easy for companies to do. three percent of the biggest u.s. corporations are run by women the women get to middle level professional status but can't seem to get into that upper. shouldn't the pressure be there as
5:39 pm
well. absolutely. not we have to take and do everything. we have to get them to project to society through their marketing and advertising we have to engage directly with shareholders with c o's to change their boards one of the campaigns that we are pushing forward is young women is fifty fifty representation of men and women incorporate in corporate boards because next year we are going to be twenty five years after the adoption it's going to be twenty five years after that ocean of the beijing platform which is one of the most comprehensive agreement that exist amongst nations for supporting gender equality and the fact that we're still talking about such dismal numbers in
5:40 pm
the presentation of women means that we actually have to be very direct about interesting that a presentation of women in boards i saw that even the churches now are calling for diversity in board these are really desperate times we only have ten countries in the world with cabinets that fifty fifty representation ten i mean choosing and putting together a cabinet is the prerogative of a prime minister any president you don't have to go to two elections about it which is a much more complex activity so surely when you become a president and you have this amount of power it should be possible to consider using their to one power in the voted so that you have to change society by bringing in the strong the extraordinary women of your country to be in leadership and through them begin to change the way society perceive women that too is
5:41 pm
wonderful. campaigns we need fifty fifty cabinets in many more countries than we have now and we need fifty fifty boards in many countries than we have now but i also have to highlight the fact that we want this change at the top but we also need to look at change it's the bottom so that we also change things for those women who it may never sit in boards who may never be in cabinet so that is why things like minimum wage is important because it's for those women who are it's the bottom of the pyramid and that is why policies that supports the women in the informal sector social protection in order to make sure that women in the informal sector have maternity leave have access to pensions have access to health care services. because for them these are just the basic things that make them
5:42 pm
leave from one day to the other so we need a bottom up as well as a top down approach what is the future. gender equality what is human women doing to make that happen is there something out of the box coming here each year and women needs everybody because we are a catalyst for change we have a mandate given to us by member states to push them to bring about changes one way in which we are using this mandate is to push for the end of all discriminatory laws in every country so rights now we're focusing a specific countries where the laws are devastating to women and engaging with the countries to bring about changes in in those countries i have to
5:43 pm
say i'm thankful that they're number of countries that are willing to bring about changes but also they are countries where it is actually quite difficult where sometimes we even see the vessel of the gains that made we are also pushing for countries who already have many good laws to implement the good laws because it takes a lot to pass a law it's a devastating disappointment when the laws are being passed we are also collaborating in partnering with a private sector for private sector to take on the responsibility of addressing the issue of equal pay because more money for women who sell their labor just as everybody else doing the same amount of work is men and then ending up with less money in their pockets that's an injustice so we're engaging directly with the private sector we have a coalition which involves member states private sector civil society human rights
5:44 pm
activists labor unions to call for for this for this change to happen we are also. actively involved in addressing the issue of financial inclusion and the use of technology in order to make sure that we can bring about services such as. more money to women in every part of the world because rights now two thirds of people in the world have access to two mobile technology and connectivity that's a lot of people but the number of people who are getting better services as a result of connectivity does lots with mobile connectivity and we are pushing for that we working with with partners in that regard because with global connectivity for instance you can improve the quality of health you can provide more money is
5:45 pm
going to get you can improve access to education you can't reduce the number of travelling that people in rural and isolated areas have to. take in order for them to access services we need to make sure that we influence the way infrastructure is used we need to influence the way innovation directs itself so that it is in innovation that once to solve problems we have a lot of innovation but we can have more innovation which is about taking pictures of ourselves we need innovation to address poverty we need innovation to address access to energy access to water it is possible the technology exists now we need the will the political will to do it and we need foresight also in the private sector to recognise that it is important to be is in business because there's a future customers if you get it right for them to get it right for yourself only
5:46 pm
the. live level thank you so much for talking to al-jazeera thing. very much for having us we look forward to coming back again and healing. the. rewind continues to care bring your people back to life i'm sorry with updates on the best about just serious documentaries the struggle continues book from bottom to no use distance revisiting. anatomy of an american city close friends who were lost to the streets i can literally see the future of baltimore to the ass of my students and it does not look rewind on al-jazeera. this is a boon for point people right now and technology there is so much going to help people
5:47 pm
it's phenomenal thanks for calling i read this is there and what are you looking for today we get to assist the client with their day to day tasks and give them more independence and freedom to suppose our votes a little that sure is a tomato exploration process. we have outside knowledge available to us no. one of the really special things about working proud is here is that even as a camera woman i get to have so much empathy and contribution to a story i feel we cover this region better than anyone else would be what it is you know it's very challenging to believe but they believe because you have a lot of people that divide their own political issues. we the people we live to tell the real stories are just mended is to do the work in depth journalism we don't feel inferior to the audience across the globe. africa's most populous nation a blog just economy has a youth unemployment problem in
5:48 pm
a bit to control the internet of the future some say a kind of digital ion go through this folding we bring you the stories that are shaping the economic world we live in. counting the cost. i mean this is different whether someone is going for something that's very rich. i think it's how you approach an individual and i think it is a certain way to contest. a story in the out. breaking news an airliner crashes in ethiopia the boeing jet with one hundred fifty seven people on board was flying from to nairobi in kenya.
5:49 pm
for the given that this is al jazeera live from doha more on that breaking news in just a moment also coming up dying never to give up the fight for freedom venezuela's opposition leader calls for a nationwide march as the country reels from a major blackout. far from home but closely watching the growing crisis we hear from algerians living abroad about their hopes and dreams for their homeland. and remembering the tibetan uprising against chinese rule sixty years on take a look at what's changed. so we begin with that breaking news an ethiopian airlines jets with one hundred fifty seven people on board has crashed the boeing seven three seven max eight took off from the capital at us about bound for nairobi in kenya it came down near the town of the shelf to eastern ethiopia if the o.p.'s prime minister tweeted his
5:50 pm
condolences for the one hundred forty nine passengers and eight crew on board and a message to families he wrote the office of the prime minister on behalf of the government and people of ethiopia would like to express his deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost loved ones on ethiopian airlines boeing seven three seven on the regular show jewel flight to nairobi kenya this morning let's get more from algiers catherine soy who's on the line now from nairobi we understand catherine that this aircraft took off from addison at eight thirty eight am local time what else do we know. catherine can you hear me. catherine soy should be on the line. she is and i think we can we can talk to alex much of us who's an aviation analyst
5:51 pm
who is joining us now via skype from malaga in spain and it's good to have you with us e.t.a. v.j. this aircraft it was a boeing seven three seven max eight am i right in thinking that that's the same kind of aircraft that crashed back in october the lion at the crash in indonesia. good afternoon yes sadly this is now looking to be the second most major most painful incident but boeing seven three seven max so seventy seven math is the brand new updated version of the bug in the seven three seven that math itself is in is all around the world and i think luke norwegian air it's really easy oki who i remember the star alliance and one such as ethiopian airlines that using this act craft as the latest the most fuel efficient short range buying at craft on the
5:52 pm
market this aircraft that has been involved in the accidents today is less than four months old it was delivered c.e.o. ken image november it flew from the u.s. it made a fuel stop in ireland and was delivered to address a bar which is the absolute that is ethiopian airlines hub and they use this as channel passengers through it and then to distribute them elsewhere on that route network the seven three seven max alex was boeing's answer to us as a three twenty or the new version more fuel efficient of the version of the a three twenty after that the line air crash crashing into the shia the airline pilots association of the us told us safety regulators that the union was curves concerned about a potential significant aviation system safety deficiency in the boeing seven three seven max aircraft what's wrong with it. i think we should be careful there
5:53 pm
because ultimately you do have that ups now that's not to say that they are unsafe or that they are more prone to invoke an accident but there are certain advisories but lots of new aircraft and that's how but you know more as they enter the marketplace and to become what you said the boeing seven three seven maps was kind of initiated in response to airbus is eight three twenty neo so that's the new engine option but of these aircraft including the seven three seven back these are chip makulu traditional boeing seven three seven designs with modifications to make the aircraft more fuel efficient so it's a new aircraft based upon one of boeing's best centers the seven three seven which is in service all around the world and if you have a lone shooter who i guarantee you probably flown on a seven three seven it's a popular choice of the airlines it's a very safe craft but of course there are now questions and this will send jitters
5:54 pm
across the industry as this is a brand new air crop that has now been it's most second fatal accident in the space of less than five months the first one of course was the lioness seven. that was just in october late october i suppose one of the things that makes this aircraft so attractive for airlines is that if they've already got a seven three seven and their fleet this brand new version of it even though it has new systems in it it. doesn't require the pilots to undergo expensive training courses in order to be able to fly it in theory they could just relatively simply go from one version the older version of the seven three seven so this new version . absolutely and this is what boeing specialize with the seven three seven max commonality is key and so there are real there are no real significant changes when
5:55 pm
flight crew are converting from the existing seventy seven supply in the seven hundred seven max there is a very short vote and for this reason it's very economical for the airlines but again this is very new more air bus do exactly the same they want to focus on commonality but it helps that bottom line financially but to bring things back to ethiopian airlines they have taken an array a new act and important that on it and this airline specifically is that they need to add craft that they know can be proven to work very reliably from addison barr airport which is ultimately on the scale of things very hot and very high temperature in altitude so when i met with the editor of ethiopian airlines in china in september it was explained to me that not all aircraft available on their marketplace was an option to. because not all of them could demonstrate that reliability from an export such as the uk which ultimately in attitude is
5:56 pm
significantly higher then where i. landed and from across the bar so for this reason this ad is quite specifically in its needs and requirements from adding and every fact very briefly alex lion air had the indonesian airline that at this brand new boeing seven three seven max that the crash back in october had. the questionable reputation as far as maintenance and safety was concerned that doesn't apply to ethiopia does it because i mean that they have as you say this brand new fleet and they look after those aircraft very well. yes you know lines are extremely safe at a mission being no doubt not really apropos at this point and so we find out further information but he had been a lot of sometimes about a couple of the best airlines on. an expanded thanks and the legs much else there
5:57 pm
are aviation analysts let's hear now from al-jazeera is catherine sawyer who is on the line from nairobi catherine we were talking just a few minutes ago about that. now that statement made by ethiopia's prime minister tell us more. yes we started by saying this. is the prime minister's office that ethiopia prime minister's office offering condolences to relatives. on board that flight and then the airline itself has issued a statement saying that and rescue operations going on they have been given a number of things. back and they have given. how this might. occur. am local time from about a couple all the field and the last contact occur on a. six minute. aircraft drop
5:58 pm
from the radar. the southeastern town of the shock two hundred forty nine passengers as you mentioned and the crew on board the airline saying that are pressing the information center is being set top and. a distress line as well. trying to find out what has happened. to get in touch with that mine to find out what's going on and to be good about what. catherine many thanks to kevin sawyer reporting live from nairobi just to to recap. if you know penalize flight number three zero two with one hundred fifty seven people on board eight crew one hundred forty nine passengers has crashed shortly after taking off from at a suburb of bound from nairobi in kenya the aircraft registration of e.t.a. v.g. was
5:59 pm
a boeing seven three seven max eight delivered in november last year it is the same craft the same type of aircraft that crashed in october the lion ad seven three seven max eight crash into these. last year more details on that breaking news and when we get it here on. in the meantime we'll move on to the rest of the day's news parts of venezuela remain without electricity as the political battle for power intensifies mass rallies subpoena held both for and against president nicolas maduro he's blaming the power and telecoms blackouts and what he called an international cyber attack on the dura says that a coup attempts led by rival why though has been defeated the opposition leader is vowing to lead a nationwide march on carcass of zeros to raise a bow is that. it was a protest to win territory in the capital caracas thousands responded to opposition
6:00 pm
leader why those call to take over victoria. an area that's been off limits for the opposition because it has been traditionally controlled by supporters of the. was a free though to me it was among those trying to convince the police to join in the protest. we want them to join us because we are the people not the government we are the majority right now that needs change and it's not represented by nicolas maduro. this rally is the opposition's latest move to oppose government after a failed attempt to get aid into the country with the help of the united states if i gathered in three different parts of that i can then said haven't you and now they're trying to make it till the end of this road where they're supposed to lead opposition leader one rival but they're saying as you can see here that the boy i mean nationality god wants i doubt that that. a few minutes later people
6:01 pm
started to push to get the bully varian national guard off the street they left the area to avoid a major confrontation. arrived hours later begging venezuelans not to. is hope if we've said it before the regime wants to wear us out brothers and sisters and yes the road has been very long the road is worn out but we will never tire in the search for freedom. the protest happened after a major power outage left much of venezuela in complete darkness the first blackout was caused by a failure at the good hydroelectric plant in the state of. electricity supply began to return on saturday but then power and communications collapsed once again. the government also organize.
